Go to this page and read until you find five quotes that speak your truth. Taken from katydidinoz.
- 1) Many books require no thought from those who read them, and for a very simple reason; they made no such demand upon those who wrote them.
- Charles Caleb Colton (1780 - 1832), Lacon, 1820
2) Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Sir Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626)
- 3) The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot.
- Mark Twain (1835 - 1910), What Is Man? (1906)
4) Any man who afflicts the human race with ideas must be prepared to see them misunderstood. H. L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)
- 5) Quotation, n: The act of repeating erroneously the words of another.
- Ambrose Bierce (1842 - 1914), The Devil's Dictionary

Instructions: 1 - Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
2 - Go to Random quotations: The last four words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.
3 - Go to flickr's "explore the last seven days": Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
Put it all together, that's your first album.

I just wanted to wish all my LJ friends a very happy, safe, wonderful new year! I hope you all had a lovely night and aren't suffering too much today!
We had Rohan, Vanessa and Ben over to enjoy the heat and celebrations last night and it was just lovely, albeit rather warm.
I'm very lucky to have such wonderful friends and I look forward to sharing 2008 with everyone!

I've just done another shop at Riverkids! Inspired by Vanessa, I ordered some Christmas goodies, as well as a bag. They arrived so fast and wrapped in a lovely ream of cloth. I'm doing another shop now, just because it's soooo lovely. I'd recommend their stuff - it's gorgeous and helps poor families in Cambodia.

How wonderful it is!!! I'm so happy. I celebrated with my like-minded ex-flatmate Belinda and our boys. We had Indian and champers and cheered! And then the text messages and phone calls came in. How I love my friends and family. Poor Belinda could only think of two friends that were Labor voters. She needs to choose better friends!
It's going to be wonderful to have a Prime Minister who isn't afraid to look intelligent. Who uses words like 'anathema' in his acceptance speech. Who makes a point of celebrating diversity and acknowledges the issues facing indigenous Australians. I remember reading an article by Rudd a year or so ago in The Monthly. I was impressed then by his intellect and compassion.
And go Julia! How fabulous that a talented female is our deputy PM! The next four years will hopefully be very interesting.
On a side note - poor Democrats. Meg Lees did a great job of destroying them and what a shame they're pretty much over.

Oh I'm so proud of my team!! 44 years since they've won a grand final. I've seen them lose several, but to have them win so absolutely is just wonderful! What a season - record winning streak, Brownlow medallist, rising star award, 9 players in the all-Australian team, and now the premiership!
Thanks to Ben for sitting and watching his first ever game of football with me and not mocking my screaming, cheering, scarf-waving and all my other fan antics. We had fun picking out the hot boys in the Cats!
We also drank a LOT of wine through the course of the afternoon, but I hardly felt it through all the adrenalin!
We finished off a great day with Rohan and Vanessa over for curry. Yummy!

Sad news - Madeleine L'Engle has died, aged 88. I loved her Wrinkle in Time series as a child (and as an adult!). There's a tribute on her official website: http://www.madeleinelengle.com/

I had a very fun day today at the football with my work friend Kate. She's from Canada, so it was fun to explain what was going on. I think I'm an excellent teacher! The Cats won by the fifth greatest winning margin in a finals game ever. Bit sad it wasn't a better match, but it's so great to see my team playing SO well! Hurrah!

Why does my computer hate me?! It crashes when anything vaguely recent runs (such as WoW). We've already replaced most of the innards. We're broke, annoyed and at our wit's end! I'm stuck playing spider solitaire to pass the time...

My brother and his girlfriend just bought a house on the weekend. It's a semi-detached in East St Kilda, and it looks nice on the web ad for it. This is great for them, although less great for me, as it means my mother can turn her sights fully on to me to get us in the market. We're lucky - I have parents who are willing to chip in and help out. But they're very keen for us to get off our asses RIGHT NOW, and we're lazy folk who do these large things in our own time. Anyway, stay tuned for more updates as we struggle to maybe enter the home-owners club while maintaining a cordial relationship with my somewhat overly caring mum.

We just had a power failure for an hour, while I was writing the previous post. I'm amazed that I didn't lose any of my entry! Woohoo for save drafts!
I finished the His Dark Materials trilogy last night and actually cried a wee bit at the end. Ooh it's so wonderful. I recommend people read it before they see the film in December.

Work is kind of sucky at the moment. Not the actual work or the wonderful people I work with, but the crappy way we are managed. All of us feel undervalued - it's a major hassle to get a decent chair that won't give us back pain and us editors are having to put up with 15 inch monitors (despite the fact that we read text on them all the time). It looks like those sorts of complaints are being addressed now, which is great, but considering the management decided to put in a bar that no one uses and that we know cost tens of thousands of dollars, it's all a bit jarring. People aren't getting paid well enough for their skills and awesomeness either.
This is despite the fact that our nice but inept manager is surely on a six-figure sum. Why is it senior managers can be totally useless and not be held accountable, but mere minions who do the actual work and clean up after the inept senior manager get paid 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4 of their wage and get all the blame but none of the glory? I'm vocal and sure enough of myself that I can kick up a stink (to a degree) but there's people getting totally rooted who aren't. *sigh* Anyway, it makes for a less-than-fulfilled workplace. Thank God the team all gets along so well.
The query I had was more of a professional one. I did a fabulous course on conflict management earlier in the year and stayed in touch with the woman who ran it. She's doing a thesis which her supervisor has recommend she get published in a trade journal. It's a businessy-type thing about communication and conflict in the workplace. Her supervisor (to my surprise) can't recommend any academic/management type journals to her, so I thought I'd ask if anyone had any recommendations, leads or contacts I could pass on to her. I'm keen to help her as her class helped me an awful lot. Any ideas?

I'm reading this trilogy at the moment and it's absolutely wonderful. I'm really looking forward to the film now.
Adam and I went to see the Kaiser Chiefs with some friends tonight. They're a great band who put on an awesome show. They have lots of very sing-along-to-able songs. I saw Ash last week and tomorrow night is the Arctic Monkeys and Wednesday is Hot Chip. And Muse have announced a show!!! *sigh with joy*

only feeling like it.
I was off sick last week with a crappy cold. The doctor basically said all I can do is wait it out. I'm still waiting! I had a massive coughing fit today while I was on the phone to someone. My colleagues thought it was hilarious that I was talking to the Red Cross at the time! To be honest, they're right.
We saw King Lear on Saturday night, starring Ian McKellen. I am so glad I have had a chance to see this great man on stage. What a privilege to watch someone like him at work. Truly a master of his craft. Lear is such a confusing, depressing play in a lot of ways, but he did a great job of giving a sense of sympathy to an old man who basically engineers his own downfall (like any good Shakespearean tragic hero).
I'm desperately hoping I'll get well soon. I've got a marathon of band gigs in the next week, due to all sorts of groups appearing at the Splendour in the Grass festival and touring around it. Thursday is Ash, Monday is Kaiser Chiefs, Tuesday is Arctic Monkeys (must get their new CD before then) and Wednesday is Hot Chip. I'm tossing up whether I should get tickets to see Editors this Friday, but poverty may get the better of me!
It was fab to catch up Kenneally and Claire on Sunday as well. Have a good trip home Kenneally!

My lovely friend Ben has poked me into updating my journal. I must admit I've been stupidly slack in keeping this up to date. (20 weeks according to livejournal!)
Anyway, here's what I've been up to: * July/August: worked a crazy amount of hours on a number of projects for work, taking stuff home to proofread until 1 in the morning. I have a 'humourous' photo of me sitting behind a pile of maunscripts on my desk where you can only see the top of my head. * September: went to the UK for a 4-week holiday with Adam, Vanessa and Rohan. Caught up with Robin and Keneally while we were over there as well. Absolutely loved it there. Hoping to get photos and descriptions up here soon. In short, we went to London, Cornwell, Bath (loved it!), Stratford, North Wales, Chester, Derbyshire, York, Lake District, Inverness, Edinburgh and Lincoln. * October has been a nice month, despite the fact that work's trying to get hectic on me again. I won't let it break me!! Had a lovely trip out to the wineries in the Yarra Valley with Ben and his family, caught up with some friends I haven't seen for a while and have started walking around the lake near work most days during lunch. * November: I'm trying my hand at the Nanonwrimo challenge - write a 50,000 word novel in a month. I'm not sure how it will go, as I only have vague ideas at this stage, but I've got about 1500 words in the first couple of days. Hoping to knock a lot more off soon!
Anyway, that's a summary of what I've been up to. I'll try and get UK pics up soon and I'll keep people posted on my writing progress!
